I have known Susan and key members of her team from earlier projects with their legacy firms for over 15 years. My recent re-introduction to Susan and the Packard design team occurred in spring of this year on a 63,000 SF tenant interior project for Kronos Incorporated. Packard Design has done an excellent job managing a demanding user group population while operating under the constraints of a cost conscious senior management team, a demanding landlord who is in a turnkey relationship with Kronos, my firm Northstar (the OPM for the tenant) and Calnan the contractor. The Packard team has skillfully and diplomatically moved the project and all its disparate stakeholders forward in a timely manner (one month from approved SD to CD) and proved to me that good design can be achieved without a lot ego and doesn’t necessarily need to result in an expensive build-out. I would welcome the opportunity to work with them on future projects.
AIR Worldwide has worked with Packard Design on several buildout projects over the years, including new space buildouts at 131 Dartmouth and 3 Copley, and a refresh project at 131 Dartmouth. Equity was looking for an architectural firm that could provide fresh and creative thinking to design several ·’business ready” floors for tenants in the marketplace. We decided to hire Packard Design based on my prior experiences with the team and the firm’s excellent reputation. Packard Design has been an amazingly innovative and collaborative partner. They put forth multiple ideas for how to develop design solutions that meet our aesthetic, functional, and budget requirements. Packard Design works harmoniously with our Leasing team, Contractors, Engineers, and Building Staff.
Packard Design is refreshing… Over my 20+ years of working with different architectural firms, on various types of projects, I have found a firm that truly gets it. They are not in it for the “portfolio piece”, or the recognition awards (although that often is a result of their fabulous designs), they are in it for the long term relationship and solid designs. Susan Packard has cherry picked the best of the best and has created a winning team that has diverse backgrounds and talents. They are very passionate about design and pushing the envelope if the right opportunity arises, but they listen to the needs of the client (function, budget, branding, etc) and design within those parameters.
I started my relationship with Packard Design only a couple of years ago and have used them on several projects across the country- ranging from our Corporate HQ expansion to a small center of excellence for one of our divisions. Their ability to consistently deliver a product that pushes the limits of our comfort zone in design and finishes, resulting in a space that the end users are very proud to call their home, has been unmatched by any firm I have used in my career to date.
Packard Design did a tremendous job taking a high level vision from iRobot Management for a brighter, more open and collaborative workplace that would energize the workforce and making it a reality. They worked with the various user groups to address the practical realities of making the requested renovations, while preserving the ultimate project objectives. They were flexible when needed as the vision evolved. The Packard team provided ideas, alternatives and recommendations to meet both our design requirements and our budget limitations while maintaining schedule.
As a result of the Packard team’s knowledge, experience and enthusiasm, the entire facility has been transformed. Our labs have been re-designed for more scalability and windows were installed in them so that employees, as well as visitors, could see all of the exciting work we do here. The addition of significant amounts of natural light, combined with a different color scheme, has completely altered the mood of the work environment. And, the open collaboration spaces, including a new Community Space, are drawing more employees together for professional and personal reasons, achieving our goal of spontaneous collaboration. The design Packard created for us truly delivered the vision we had.
We made an excellent choice when we selected Packard Design to design our new North American Headquarters. Our project was quite a challenge as we hadn’t renovated or moved in many years, and we weren’t up to speed on workplace best practices. Packard Design walked our in-house team through the process from kick-off to move in. The Packard team members communicate clearly and are excellent consensus builders. They are collaborative, professional and responsive. They looked out for our best interests when dealing with the Developer and his Contractor and were able to advocate for larger windows and a very nice base building aesthetic. The end result is an inspiring and functional place to work. Every employee that I have spoken with raves about our new facility; the quality, the design, natural light and amenities. Our workforce is energized and proud of our new home.
The Packard Design team wholeheartedly embraced our relocation challenge and participated more as a virtual extension of my own staff than as an outside firm. This team has a can-do, figure out how to make it work within a tight budget and schedule, that is an attitude that was truly refreshing and always professional. They are fun, creative, know their stuff, and are clearly focused on client service and quality in execution. They were also very sensitive to the emotional impact that relocation can cause an existing firm that already has a lot of work to do. They essentially became surrogate employees to A123 and frequently communicated the plans for the new spaces and the timelines using story boards, 3D drawings, project schedules and enlisted key management on how to effectively communicate the plans to minimize confusion, anxiety and generate excitement about the move. It would be my pleasure to collaborate with this team again.
When we decided to relocate to new space with a different image, we looked at our past experience with designers and realized that we wanted to work with someone who actually listens and works with us, and doesn’t just provide designs for the sake of design. It was just as important to find a team that would be a pleasure to work with along the way. We selected the staff at Packard Design because of their experience, their energy, and their sense of humor. Our meetings with Packard are always productive and always fun – and, yes, we actually laugh at meetings.
